Laima Zdanytė from Griežiai Village (Klaipėda Region) is a member of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT-8, Afghanistan. Lietuvos vadovaujamoje Afganistano Goro provincijos atkūrimo grupėje tarnauja klaipėdiškė Laima Zdanytė, gyvenanti Klaipėdos rajono Griežių kaime.
Laima is a Corporal in the National Defence Volunteer Force. In the mission she undertook a slightly surprising duties - as for a woman - of an assistant machine-gunner.
„There are no male and female jobs in the army, just soldiers' duty. Armed Forces is not the right place for those who look for an easer way", told the soldier about her duties in the mission including protecting the compound, escorting military and civilian members of the PRT to town, and patrolling. „One of the most pleasant moments in the mission for me is after a long night-watch waiting for the sun to finally rise showering in pink colour mountains opposite the camp. Even though night-watch is tiring, I love watching the night sky - a really special spectacle in these places: on a clear night there are so many stars in the sky they seem dense, and you can often see tem fall. They say that here, in Afghanistan, we are nearer the stars by two kilometres than we are back home, in Lithuania ", told Laima.
This is the second Laima's deployment on an international mission. Three years ago she took part in NATO KFOR operation in Kosovo. „In Kosovo my duty range was slightly different - I used to be sent to patrol in the responsibility area more often while in Afghanistan my main tasks are in the compound area. Our camp in Kosovo was larger, there were more people taking part in the operation, and there were shops, cafés, and more opportunities to spend your leisure time. It is different here, in Afghanistan, however, I am satisfied with living conditions: we have a good gym, and a club where you can drop in for some karaoke-singing and hang out with friends. So I might generalise that more communication here induces warmer and closer relations between peacekeepers ", told Laima.
Laima has been a part of the National Defence Volunteer Force since 2006. Her favourite spare time activities are fishing and singing. Excellent voice of the soldier adorns every celebration in the PRT compound.
Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT is a joint military-civilian mission of Lithuania operating under the NATO's International Security Assistance Force.
Lithuania sent the first rotation of Chaghcharan PRT to Afghanistan in June 2005. Provincial Reconstruction Team is responsible for helping Central Government of Afghanistan extend its authority in the province, ensuring security and creating environment for provincial reconstruction.
Currently the eight rotation of Chaghcharan PRT provides security in Ghowr. The rotation is mainly comprised of members of Zemaiciai Military District 3rd Territorial Unit of the Lithuanian National Defence Volunteer Force. It is a second rotation staffed mostly of the National Defence Volunteer Forces members.
Lithuanian-led PRT comprises Danish, Croatian, American, Ukrainian and Georgian military next to Lithuanian personnel.
